Around 80 monks live in the Spanish Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat at an altitude of 721 meters. You can reach the foot of the mountain after around 40 kilometers from Barcelona, then take the cable car up to the monastery, which, like the well-known Tiger's Nest Monastery in Bhutan, nestles closely against the rock walls. Many pilgrims make a pilgrimage to Montserrat Monastery to see La Moreneta, a depiction of the Virgin Mary from the 12th century.
