African penguin in South Africa

The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) belongs to the genus of the same name within the penguin family (Spheniscidae). They are the only penguins in Africa still living in the wild today. We were able to experience them near Cape Town, where they swim back and forth between the bathers at "Boulders Beach" like little black arrows. This stretch of coast south of Simon’s Town got its name because of the large, rounded granite boulders that withstood the weathering of the sea better than the otherwise predominant sandstone.
